For episode 20, my guest is Hamish Duncan. At 16, he became a professional snowboarder but at 22 he broke his back forcing him to rethink his life. After finding a love of storytelling and brand identity design, Hamish eventually set up Penny Black that transforms digital products that move businesses, people and planet forward.
What I love about this episode is the power of being a generalist. Hamish’ attributes some of his success is to do with knowing a little bit about a lot of things but a real depth of knowledge about business needs. Hamish has let all these different interests - photography, wildlife, snowboarding - inspire his design aesthetic and the clients he attracts.
Don’t be a clone is Hamish’ advice - make sure you don’t squash your general interests because it is what makes you truly distinct!
Hamish's 3 failures are:
1) Feeling overwhelmed and held back by people that are better than you
2) Failing to appreciate being a generalist
3) Realising money is an energy and failing at investing in the wrong projects
